LATE PICK 4 … Plus a bonus race …

LEG 1: (Race 6: Dirt, 5½F , Astoria S. $150k, 2F)

The Late Pick 4 sequence on this Thursday of Belmont’s “Big Week” … Belmont Stakes Racing Festival … is going to pit some freshmen fillies against one another. These are some tough races because their form is just now taking shape. Luckily, I have a strong opinion about Norm Casse’s entry, a Florida bred called Devious Dame #6. She looks the part after breaking her maiden on debut at Churchill Downs during Derby Week. If she can take a step forward, then she has the chance to be a strong threat over the course of the summer. A daughter of Girvin, we should hear from her during the NYRA Series … Let’s start this sequence with a “Single,” and move right along.

LEG 2: (Race 7: Turf, 1 1/8th, ALLW92kn1x, F&M 3+)

Keeping apprised of the weather forecast might be a solid plan, as you handicap for Thursday’s races. We might have significant moisture on the turf courses, and I am sure the Belmont Team will do everything they can to make the situation as safe as possible. Looking over this field, I am pretty pleased to see Christophe Clement’s Community Adjusted #9 have the opportunity to return to NYRA’s Belmont. She raced on the Derby undercard, going 1 1/8th on the new Matt Winn TC, and to the casual observer, did not show very much—4th. Let’s not forget that was her 1st start of the ’22 campaign, and I am thinking that she will relish the opportunity to runback on the Inner Turf. Irad Ortiz is just on fire of late, and his turf riding is second-to-none. I would expect Clement to have made all the proper adjustments at this point. When you see the grass distance sire like Dynaformer along a bloodline … you cannot pass something like that up. I am convinced that this entry is the play. Even though Clement also sends out Eylara #5, and Flavien Prat and Chad Brown connect with Klaravich’s Investmentstrategy #1, I am still non-plussed. Saving our strength for the 2nd half of this ticket will assist.

LEG 3: (Race 8: Dirt, 5½F, Tremont S. $150k, 2)

Switching to the “boys” race for 2-yr-olds, we have 8 going forward that will be traversing this dirt sprint. I think this is a tougher race because there are several runners that could fire in what will be their 2nd career race. If I am forced to choose a “top pick,” then it is hard to go against Wesley Ward’s No Nay Hudson #4. The colt by No Nay Never was awfully sharp on debut, just as Keeneland was going dark in April. This speedy speedster has all the qualities of a winner … early gait … a strong jockey in John Velazquez … and then … there is trainer Wesley Ward’s history with these types. The Kentucky-based trainer never quite garners the respect that he deserves in situations like these. Outside of his bailiwick … So, it will be interesting to watch the tote to see where this one’s odds settle. If he runs like he did in that 4½F dash @KEE, then it is going to be over early. Thinking more broadly about this race, I am also interested in Rudy Rodriguez’s Valenzan Day #5, Brian Lynch’s Two of a Kind #7, and finally, Peter Walder’s Zelenskyy Strong #8. Each of these exhibited some strong “foot” after they left the gate at Belmont, Churchill, and Gulfstream, respectively. What a mad run down the backstretch this one is going to be …

LEG 4: (Race 9: Turf, 6F, MC40k, F&M 3+)

It would not be a “horizontal” on a big race week without a finale on the turf. This maiden affair is a tough puzzle … I am not going to lie. What would be superb … if we can find a long shot, which would really increase the payout. I like Michelle Nevin’s Dame Time #7 because not only is she logical, but is by super sire Into Mischief. Her form, running against MSW Co. speaks to the fact that she can handle this type of company. It might be a simple “Single,” with Trevor McCarthy in the irons. But these races never quite go like we think, and that means thinking broadly is a much better proposition. The rest of the runners drawn to McCarthy’s right include Mark Hennig’s “firster” Noble Aviate #8, Rudy Rodriguez’s (trainer/owned) U Can’t Handle This #9, Ray Handal’s well-bred Queen de La Crème #10, and Nevin’s “also-eligible,” Queen Quist #11. I like this bunch for their turf bloodlines, and the fact that they emanate from some sturdy barns. This is an open race for a number of reasons, and I would not count any of these runners out. What a sequence this Thursday has to its credit!

Ticket: 6 / 9 / 4-5-7-8 / 7-8-9-10-11(AE)

Race 3: Turf, 1 1/8th, Wonder Again S. (G2), $200k, 3F …

I couldn’t resist missing out on ‘capping the Wonder Again, which is a Grade 2 turf race of some renown. Normally scheduled during the festival, it brings together some celebrated grass barns like Brown, Clement, McGaughey, and Motion. No disrespect to Tom Albertrani, but I am not sure that his entry, Sweet Sensation #4, has much of a shot in here. When it comes to a top choice, you could make a strong case for Chad Brown’s Consumer Spending #3. Against Bobby Flay’s Pizza Bianca in the Memories of Silver $100k at Aqueduct, she was pretty swift in the end, rallying for a nice score. If she is on her game, then she can be extremely tough. I want to try and beat her with both Clement’s Myriskyaffair #2 and Shug’s Skims #7. These are both classy turf routers with experience. If Joel Rosario or Flavien Prat can get them loose at the top of the lane, then either of them has a chance to visit the winner’s circle. This is a short field, but it has some salty quality to it.
